JLab’s new Talk line of microphones includes three models(l-r) — the Talk Go, Talk Pro and Talk.

San Diego, CA (April 29, 2020) — While best-known for its consumer earbuds and headphones, JLab Audio is expanding into the USB microphone market with the introduction of its Talk line of mics aimed at podcasters, streamers, home recordists and others. The line debuts with three models—the JLab Talk Go, Talk and Talk Pro.

All JLab Audio Talk microphones feature plug & play compatibility, 3.5 mm headphone jack for zero-latency, quick-mute button, 5/8″ mounting metal foldable stands and on-mic controls. In addition, each model comes with a USB / USB-C braided cable. The mics have a 20 Hz – 20 kHz frequency response and a 120 dB max SPL.

The Talk Go condenser mic is intended to be more portable, and is earmarked for calling, streaming and podcasting. It offers 96 k/24-bit recording and sports two 14 mm condensers, offering both cardioid and omni patterns.

Explore Podcast Pro

The Talk builds on that, including three condensers and four directional options—cardioid, omni, stereo and bi-directional—and the Talk Pro takes those specs and adds in a recording sample rate of 192 k.

“While we’re not abandoning our roots in audio, the Talk series shows that JLab’s ability to innovate can go well beyond what you hear, to what you say, and potentially, even further,” said JLab CEO Win Cramer.

The JLab Talk GO ($49), Talk ($99) and Talk Pro ($149 ) are all scheduled to ship in early May, 2020.

Japanese environmental composer Takashi Kokubo’s 1985 LP Digital Soundology #1 reissued

Crafted using a Fairlight CMI and Yamaha MSX.

Japanese ambient and environmental composer Takashi Kokubo’s 1985 album Digital Soundology #1 Volk Von Bauhaus is being reissued on vinyl, via Glossy Mistakes this June.

Read more: Composing for space: The meticulous design of Japanese environmental sounds

While Kokubo remains largely unknown, his work has almost become a soundtrack to life in Japan, having designed everything from credit card payment jingles to the country’s nationally-used mobile phone earthquake alert.

For Digital Soundology #1, Kokubo looked to the radical philosophy that emerged from the Bauhaus movement, similarly aiming to create “a revolutionary musical expression that shatters the old values.”

To do so, Kokubo shunned keyboard players, multitrack tape-recording techniques, and analogue sounds, instead using only the Fairlight CMI for 3-tracks, and primarily the Yamaha MSX for 6 tracks.

“I think this production process was quite similar to the way Picasso was creating art which I saw later and was inspired from: a kind of creative fragmentation,” explains Kokubo.

Originally released on King Records in 1985, Glossy Mistake’s reissue of Digital Soundology #1 Volk Von Bauhaus marks the album’s first vinyl reissue, and includes a previously unheard track by Kokubo.

It follows the re-release of Kokubo’s music for a 1987 luxury air conditioner,  A Dream Sails Out To Sea (Get At The Wave), on LAG Records – one of our favourite reissues of 2018.

South Korean musician Jin Hi Kim fuses electric komungo with video in Digital Buddha

Experimental zen.

Incheon-born composer and musician Jin Hi Kim first began her studies of traditional Korean music in South Korea during 1973.

Focusing extensively on the komungo, also known as the goguryeo – a Korean fretted-board zither that originated in the fourth century – Kim helped to bring the instrument to global attention when she developed the world’s first electric version.

Kim later introduced its sounds to international audiences following her move to California, where she studied with artists including Lou Harrison, Terry Riley, and David Rosenboom.

Decades later, Kim’s work has seen her combine her sounds with multimedia installations that incorporate sociopolitical themes, meditation and psychoacoustic theory.

Pairing the electric komungo with visual art and digital animation on Digital Buddha (2007), Kim intended to transform and pacify the neuroticism she identifies as intrinsic to daily American life.
