The problems with old shellac record preservation

Seasoned audiophiles often keep all kinds of records in their collection: from brand new records fresh off the press to old LPs dating back to the 1940s (or even earlier). If you’re a lucky owner of such a sizable collection, then congratulations – your musical library and taste probably extends beyond most people’s imaginations. However, there’s also a good chance you’d run into trouble before when it came to caring for older records. Why is old shellac record preservation so difficult and how is it different from taking care of new LPs?

The answer is relatively simple. Obviously, older records tend to be in far worse conditions simply due to their age – after all, there aren’t a lot of things that stay the same way after 50-60 years. Another thing you have to take into account is the pressing technology of the 1930s-1940s. Given that records at the time weren’t made just from PVC, the quality of the material used was never really perfect or even close to that; combine that with the various imperfections that are imprinted and impossible to change after pressing, and it’s not hard to see why attempting to interact in any way with one of these records can be a real pain.

So how does one tackle the problem of old shellac record preservation? After all, we don’t want these records to just slowly deteriorate to the point of being completely unplayable, right? Well, there are a few things you can do to make sure your audio treasury won’t rot away. It seems like basic common sense, but records have to be clean to live a longer life. The longer dirt is stuck in the grooves, the harder and more solid (and more difficult to remove) it becomes. Again, this seems obvious, but not everyone has the time to clean their entire LP collection; even if one finds ample time to do it, most people don’t have an idea of how to do it the right way.

We’ve established that older records are fragile and sensitive; using that information, one can conclude that any random cleaning solution won’t be able to get the job done, or, if it contains strong chemicals, will do more harm than good by removing dirty substances, but dealing damage to the surface of the record. So, in order to take good care of our shellac friends, we need a special cleaning solution that will be able to remove dirt from the depths of the record, but won’t harm it in any way.

So is there a special solution to help with old shellac record preservation?

To solve this conundrum of old shellac record preservation, we have conducted research of various possible chemical solutions before we came up with the formula that is now used in our Easy Groove line for vinyl record care. While we primarily targeted vinyl records, we made sure our solutions can be successfully applied to really old 78 rpm shellacs too. Our formula is efficient in thoroughly cleaning out the grooves of any record, old and new, and it leaves no toxic chemical residue behind (unlike many ordinary household cleaning solutions). It also provides antistatic (a must for audiophiles) and antibacterial (a necessity for any vinyl records) treatment, making it the most complete solution on the market.

We hope that you use the various items in the Easy Groove line and the Easy Groove Superset to your advantage so you can solve all the problems of old shellac record preservation in one fell swoop. So enjoy Easy Groove – and never worry about your old shellacs’ condition ever again.
