AES Show Continues Show Floor Tradition

New York, NY (October 23, 2020)—While the Audio Engineering Society currently holding its annual AES Show Fall 2020 Convention online, that doesn’t mean the time-honored tradition of roaming the show floor looking at exhibitors’ wares has gone away. It’s still around in a new form through the end of October: the AES Partner Showcase.

The AES Partner Showcase offers a virtual online trade show, hosting both live and on-demand events and presentations, live chat and Q&A with brands, and an array of sessions from more than 60 exhibitors. Dedicated Partner Showcase pages from each brand include live sessions, on-demand videos, product launches, partner discounts, information downloads and collateral, and an exclusive chance to network and ask questions of product specialists and presenters from around the world, with archives of Showcase events available for streaming after their initial presentation.

AES Show featured Platinum Partners include Amazon Devices, Focusrite, Focusrite Pro, Genelec, NTP Technology (DAD, Penta), and the Recording Academy Producers and Engineers Wing.

AES 2020: Something for Everyone, Everywhere

For everything AES Show 2020 has to offer, including the Technical Program, All Access Registration starts at $149 for AES Members and $99 for AES Student Members.

ISE 2021 Exclusive Update: On the Record with AVIXA’s Joé Lloyd

ISE 2021

If you haven’t heard, Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) is officially moving from Feb. 2-5, 2021 to June 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. AVNetwork sat down with Joé Lloyd, AVIXA’s senior director of communications, to hear the latest information on ISE 2021 and InfoComm 2021.

“Research shows us that people definitely want to get back to face-to-face meetings,” said Lloyd. “While everybody has their own personal timeline of when that will happen, overwhelming, the majority of people feel like May/June is the time of year that people will be able to come back together.”

“As an organization, we’ll be able to bring AV professionals back together in that timeframe,” she continued. “There will be a show in Asia, a show in Europe, and a show in North America, all in a timeframe that our audiences have told us that they want to get together.”

Lloyd added that AVIXA is trying to bring back face-to-face meetings in a safe way, rejuvenating the industry and the community, but always keeping the safety of all of those who take part in their events—from attendees to exhibitors to staff, and even the hotel, restaurant, transit, etc. workers in the local communities—at the forefront of it all.

While hosting two major industry tradeshows in the same month may create a conundrum for some AV professionals, Lloyd pointed out that the audiences do not overlap as much as you might think. “From a U.S. perspective, we look at ISE as our show: ‘Just in another country’,” she said. “But what’s interesting is that when you look at the attendee breakdown, these really are regionalized shows.”

According to AVIXA and ISE, in 2019, less than five percent of ISE attendees were from the U.S., and less than 11 percent of InfoComm 2019 attendees were from outside of the Americas.

The two shows, Lloyd claims, “are not competitive.” While ISE caters to both the residential and commercial markets, InfoComm focuses solely on pro AV. According to ISE’s data, 53.7 percent of ISE attendees focus solely on the pro AV market, with 38.7 percent focused on both commercial and residential. “InfoComm is pro AV all the way,” touted Lloyd

“InfoComm is not moving [because of the ISE date change],” Lloyd said firmly.  “The show, with all of our best intentions, is happening in June. We’re moving full steam ahead with a fabulous show and it’s happening June 12-18, with the exhibit hall open June 16-18.”

Breaking: NAB Moves Spring Show to Fall of 2021

NAB Show 2021 bumped from April to October, 2021.Las Vegas, NV (September 9, 2020)—The National Association of Broadcasters has decided to move the 2021 NAB Show from April to October of next year.

President/CEO Gordon Smith broke the news in an announcement to the industry. The new dates are Oct. 9 to 13, 2021, in Las Vegas.

Also announced: the 2021 fall Radio Show will be held concurrently in Vegas.

The question of what NAB might do in 2021 with the huge spring event — after cancelling it in 2020 just a few weeks before the show in the face of COVID-19 — has been a pressing and closely watched one as the industry moved into autumn for the Northern Hemisphere and as organizations began planning next year’s travel (or lack of it) without clarity on when the world health situation would ease.

The decision affects a lot of people. Registration at the most recent physical NAB Show in 2019 was reported by the association at around 91,460 people, more than a quarter of them from abroad.

Smith said NAB was aware of “a good deal of reluctance around participating in large events in the first half of next year.” He wrote that the pandemic “remains a significant threat and the evidence suggests it will be well into next year before it could be under control in the U.S.”

He said NAB also had concerns “around being able to deliver the type of event in April that will not only drive results, but one that can be produced safely for all involved and without significant limitations on the experience.”

NAB Show Express Draws Virtual Crowds

“Moving NAB Show to October means we are considering alternative 2021 dates for NAB Show New York, held annually in October,” Smith wrote.

“On the plus side, the 2021 Radio Show will co-locate with NAB Show in Las Vegas, as will NAB’s Sales and Management Television Exchange; and there is opportunity to add additional partner events.” (Next year’s Radio Show had been slated for New Orleans.)

An NAB spokeswoman told Radio World that the following year’s spring show schedule is not affected; that convention is scheduled for April 23-27, 2022.

Smith didn’t mention other shows by name but wrote, “We have done our best to avoid direct conflicts with other domestic and international events, and have reached out to allied organizations and partners to both share our thinking in advance and to offer to work collaboratively toward turning this into an opportunity for all.” The IBC Show is another large event around that time of year; it is slated next year for mid-September.

Earlier, planners of another big Vegas show, the 2021 CES, announced that their event this coming January would be held virtually

Also today, Chris Brown, NAB’s EVP of conventions, wrote to exhibitor partners, “We did not make this decision lightly and we’d like to thank you for your continued support and guidance over the last few months as we considered your feedback while also monitoring the ongoing health and safety concerns around the fight to contain the pandemic in the U.S., the projected state of the economy and travel restrictions around the world.”

Brown told exhibitors that the NAB Show staff “will be in touch in the coming weeks to review next steps to reserve your participation in the 2021 NAB Show.”

New York, NY (September 1, 2020)—This year’s AES Show Fall 2020 Convention has lined up an extensive Hip-Hop and R&B track, led by co-chairs Armand Jennings and Paul “Willie Green” Womack, set to explore everything from the mixing of Run the Jewels’ latest release, RTJ4, to the feature Black Music Roundtable event, all via livestreamed and on-demand content at AESShow.com.

Black music is essential to the music, film, and TV industries, and with that in mind, the AES Show 2020 Black Music Roundtable event will examine how the current shift in cultural awareness impacts opportunities for BIPOC artists, engineers, and producers in the industry. Moderated by Womack, this roundtable discussion will feature insight from industry veterans including Prince Charles Alexander (GRAMMY Award-winning producer/engineer and professor at Berklee College of Music), Leslie Gaston-Bird (Audio Engineer, Governor at Large – Audio Engineering Society), Jeriel Johnson (Exec. Director – Recording Academy [Washington D.C. Chapter]), and Carolyn Malachi (GRAMMY-nominated artist/songwriter, engineer, and professor at Howard University).

GRAMMY-nominated duo Run the Jewels’ hard-hitting sound will be the focus of “Legend Has it: Mixing Run the Jewels with Joey Raia,” exploring Raia’s approach to the group’s aggressive sound, and his hybrid mixing setup.

Other featured events in this year’s Hip-Hop and R&B events cover a broad spectrum of topics, from getting your sound to getting paid. “The Sauce – Exploring Vocal Treatments for Modern R&B with John Kercy” will explore modern vocal effects through the lens of four-time GRAMMY-nominated artist Lucky Daye’s acclaimed album, Painted. Further stressing the importance of keeping an organized and professional approach to presenting a final product, “Deliverables – What To Do When You’ve Finished the Mix with Ken ‘Duro’ Ifill” will educate attendees on exactly what assets you need to professionally deliver a mix.

NAMM Show 2021 Replaced by ‘Believe in Music Week’ Online

NAMM Believe In Music WeekCarlsbad, CA (August 10, 2020)—With the Covid-19 pandemic continuing to rage on, NAMM has shifted gears in regard to its annual NAMM Show convention, which was scheduled to take place in January, 20201. The in-person convention will not be held, but instead replaced by “Believe in Music Week,” a week-long online music event kicking off January 18, 2021.

The organization expressly states the event will not be a virtual tradeshow, but rather a panoply of programming and professional education, presented alongside “an interactive marketplace to connect buyers and sellers.” In an announcement for Believe in Music, NAMM emphasized educational offerings aimed at all segments of the MI, pro audio and retail industries that would provide thought leadership, raising the possibility of its trademark NAMM University presentations typically given at the annual trade show. Nonetheless, the organization fully plans to also provide B-to-B opportunities for product announcements, brand initiatives, customer engagement and more.

AES Names October as Audio Engineering Month

“While it remains unsafe for us to gather in person in January, Believe in Music week will use new, intuitive technology to connect us all to harness the incredible energy that happens when we come together,” Joe Lamond, NAMM President and CEO, said in a statement. “Believe in Music week will be a critical step for our industry to help us prepare for the new year and new opportunities.”

While The NAMM Show will not be taking place, many of its tent-pole events, such as the TEC Awards and Top 100 Dealer Awards will be held during Believe in Music Week. Aa always, the 36th TEC Awards will recognize individuals, companies and technical innovations behind the sound of recordings, live performances, films, television, video games and multimedia. Accordingly, the TEC Awards’ annual call for entries remains open through August 31 at www.TECAwards.org.

New York, NY (July 13, 2020)—The Audio Engineering Society has declared October “Audio Engineering Month” as it expands its traditional Fall Convention Technical Program and exhibition Showcase into the virtual realm. The AES will host four weeks of audio presentations and activities online, running from Tuesday, October 6 through Friday, October 30.

The AES Show Fall 2020 Professional Audio Convention will offer full Technical Program access featuring live and on-demand content, student and career activities, engagement with peers and audio luminaries, the audio hardware and software product showcase and special events throughout the month.

“Expanding the Convention offerings across a full month answers one of the biggest questions raised by Convention attendees in the past when faced with hundreds of compelling sessions packed into just four days: ‘How do I choose?’,” says AES Show Fall 2020 co-chair Jonathan Wyner. “Applying lessons learned from AES’s first online Convention experience with the highly successful AES Virtual Vienna, we are extending the timeline to provide our ‘attendees’ the opportunity to dive deeper into the program and explore new topics. Plus, we have some exciting and innovative new programming. A virtual event allows us to take attendees places they have never been. It also means that you will be able to see and hear presenters up close and personal as never before. All attendees will have the best seat in the house!”

AES Show Logo“With all the online content, the Convention can now be experienced by anyone in the world that has an internet connection,” adds Convention co-chair Valerie Tyler. “Combined with lowered registration fees, and without the necessity of travel costs and logistics, the 2020 AES Show will be the most accessible ever.”

The third Convention co-chair, Paul “Willie Green” Womack, takes that point further: “It’s our goal, and my personal passion, to encourage diversity in our attendees. New voices and topics during the last several AES Conventions have broadened our attendee base. Now, we’re taking the Convention directly to everyone everywhere. That can only build on our progress – there’s infinite room under the umbrella.”

The first two weeks of Audio Engineering Month will feature interviews, webinars on timely topics and an online AoIP Summit. Week three will be Student Week along with the exhibition Showcase. Week Four will bring the balance of the traditional AES Convention Tech Program – Workshops, Papers, Engineering Briefs, Keynotes and other Special Events.

Several new features of this year’s AES Convention have been designed and reworked for maximum impact for our virtual multimedia presentation formats, combining live and on-demand sessions and real-time Q&A sessions with presenters. Other new features will include a AES Show Product Launch  and virtual Tech Tours, visiting legendary studios across the globe

Early Bird rates are $99 for AES Members and $224 for non-members – the latter including one year of AES membership.

WAMCon Virtual Brings Recording Conference Online

San Francisco, CA (July 10, 2020)—San Francisco-based nonprofit Women’s Audio Mission (WAM), dedicated to the advancement of women and gender non-confirming (GNC) individuals in music production and the recording arts, is hosting its first online immersive conference, WAMCon Virtual, from July 24-25, 2020.

This year, in response to the current health pandemic, WAM has moved its conference to an online setting for the first time. WAMCon Virtual will deliver WAM’s leading panels, workshops and live demos in a safe environment and accessible format that will kick off on Friday, July 24 with the legendary women recording engineers that shaped the sound of one of the most iconic artists of our time, Prince.

“Engineering Prince” features Lisa Chamblee (Prince, Stevie Wonder), Sylvia Massy (Prince, Tool, Johnny Cash), Peggy McCreary (Prince, Booker T. Jones, Van Halen) and Susan Rogers (Prince, David Byrne).

WAM Rocks with Roxx and Beyoncé’s Band

Friday’s keynote will be followed by a full day of workshops with special guests including mix engineer Marcella Araica (M.I.A., Madonna) and front-of-house engineer Amanda Davis, who tours with Janelle Monáe, Chloe x Halle and Tegan and Sara.

“Each year we look forward to connecting to women and GNC individuals across the country through our WAMCon conferences,” says WAM executive director Terri Winston. “Given the challenges of the current environment, we worked hard to ensure we were able to deliver the same stellar, immersive training experiences with this year’s online event. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate and learn from the hands-down best music industry professionals in the business to inspire the next generation of music producers and audio professionals.”

WAM trains more than 2,000 women, girls and GNC individuals a year in music production and the recording arts to address the critical lack of women in the audio industry (less than 5%). WAM’s immersive experiences and transformative online programs have spread internationally, providing women with access to top leaders in the recording industry and an award-winning curriculum.

Since 2017, WAM has hosted six sold-out WAMCon conferences in Los Angeles, Nashville, New York and Boston, reaching more than 800 emerging women producers, engineers and musicians.

WAMCon Virtual is sponsored by Dolby, Sweetwater, The Recording Academy, sE Electronics, Stage Ten and Shure.

CEDIA Expo 2020 Cancelled; Virtual Event Planned

CEDIA Expo 2020 cancelledDenver, CO (June 2, 2020)—As with so many AV and pro audio industry events this year, CEDIA Expo 2020 has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers made the announcement Monday, citing the need to ensure that business could be conducted in “a safe and healthy environment”—something that’s anything but certain in the current climate.

CEDIA Expo 2020 was originally scheduled for September 8-12, 2020 in Denver, CO, where it would have been held at the Colorado Convention Center. The facility is currently being used as a medical care facility for non-emergency cases related to COVID-19. Citing this along with a litany of other outstanding factors, including changing guidelines on phased re-openings, restrictions on large gatherings and company-imposed travel restrictions placed on employees, convention organizers opted to pull the plug and wait until 2021 for the next in-person convocation.

Summer NAMM Cancelled; TEC Award Noms Moved

In light of the not entirely unexpected changes, the association will continue to offer the originally planned virtual portion of CEDIA Expo 2020, expanding it in order to both meet a larger demand and also create more of an offering for attendees and virtual exhibitors. To wit, the association noted, “The CEDIA Expo virtual experience will launch in September and offer everything you need to take your residential tech business to the next level, from session panels surrounding hot topics to keynotes, product discovery, networking and an interactive expo hall.”

While this year’s convention will not be held in Denver, CEDIA complimented the convention center, noting, “The Colorado Convention Center and Visit Denver have been gracious hosts to CEDIA Expo and have always embraced our community.” With trade shows in flux, much like the economy and pandemic, the organization has opted to give itself and the industry a considerable lead time until the next in-person event, which is now scheduled to take place September 1-3, 2021 in Indianapolis, IN – home to the CEDIA Association.
