Groningen, Netherlands (September 8, 2020)—The Rolling Stones won’t be hitting the road anytime soon due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but their stuff? That’s another story. The Rolling Stones – Unzipped is a museum exhibition that will kick off its own international tour in November at the Groninger Museum in The Netherlands. Presenting classic moments from the group’s half-century of rocking and shocking, the highlight of the exhibition will be an immersive Dolby Atmos concert experience mixed and played back on a PMC speaker system.

Presented using Dolby Atmos for Music, the exhibition’s finale presentation is the band’s 2016 Latin America tour documentary, Olé, Olé, Olé, and concert footage from the band’s concert in Havana, Cuba. Five large screens will immerse fans, along with an array of PMC’s new Ci140 speakers and as yet unreleased flagship active subwoofers the BST, providing 23 channels of Dolby Atmos soundtrack powered by in excess of 20,000 watts.

Additional bass support is provided by the new BST active subwoofers.

PMC's Highland Park Atmos Studio
PMC’s Highland Park Atmos Studio will be used for remixing the group’s 2016 Havana concert into Dolby Atmos for Music format.

Prior to the exhibition, PMC is working with the Rolling Stones’ label, Universal Music (UMG), on the remixing of the audio soundtrack into Atmos. This work is being undertaken by Nick Reeves, staff engineer at UMG’s Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, in the PMC equipped Studio C using Dolby’s technology. Additional mixing is taking place at PMC own Dolby Atmos equipped Highland Park Studio in LA, California.

PMC’s Maurice Patist commented, “To be involved in a project like this, with the biggest band in the world, is a major honor for PMC. Our close relationship with UMG and Dolby led to the creation of a state-of-the-art Atmos production studio at Capitol Studios, which is hailed as the reference for this kind of audio mixing.” He continues, “UMG will be mixing the soundtrack at Capitol and also at our own Atmos facility in Highland Park, LA, before it is replayed to the fans at this spectacular exhibition using the same speakers used for the mix. No other speaker system can get the fans nearer to the essence of the band and it is going to be a real treat for visitors.”

AES Names October as Audio Engineering Month

(l-r): AES Show Fall 2020 Convention Co-Chairs Paul “Willie Green” Womack, Valerie Tyler and Jonathan Wyner

New York, NY (July 13, 2020)—The Audio Engineering Society has declared October “Audio Engineering Month” as it expands its traditional Fall Convention Technical Program and exhibition Showcase into the virtual realm. The AES will host four weeks of audio presentations and activities online, running from Tuesday, October 6 through Friday, October 30.

The AES Show Fall 2020 Professional Audio Convention will offer full Technical Program access featuring live and on-demand content, student and career activities, engagement with peers and audio luminaries, the audio hardware and software product showcase and special events throughout the month.

“Expanding the Convention offerings across a full month answers one of the biggest questions raised by Convention attendees in the past when faced with hundreds of compelling sessions packed into just four days: ‘How do I choose?’,” says AES Show Fall 2020 co-chair Jonathan Wyner. “Applying lessons learned from AES’s first online Convention experience with the highly successful AES Virtual Vienna, we are extending the timeline to provide our ‘attendees’ the opportunity to dive deeper into the program and explore new topics. Plus, we have some exciting and innovative new programming. A virtual event allows us to take attendees places they have never been. It also means that you will be able to see and hear presenters up close and personal as never before. All attendees will have the best seat in the house!”

AES Show Logo“With all the online content, the Convention can now be experienced by anyone in the world that has an internet connection,” adds Convention co-chair Valerie Tyler. “Combined with lowered registration fees, and without the necessity of travel costs and logistics, the 2020 AES Show will be the most accessible ever.”

The third Convention co-chair, Paul “Willie Green” Womack, takes that point further: “It’s our goal, and my personal passion, to encourage diversity in our attendees. New voices and topics during the last several AES Conventions have broadened our attendee base. Now, we’re taking the Convention directly to everyone everywhere. That can only build on our progress – there’s infinite room under the umbrella.”

The first two weeks of Audio Engineering Month will feature interviews, webinars on timely topics and an online AoIP Summit. Week three will be Student Week along with the exhibition Showcase. Week Four will bring the balance of the traditional AES Convention Tech Program – Workshops, Papers, Engineering Briefs, Keynotes and other Special Events.

Several new features of this year’s AES Convention have been designed and reworked for maximum impact for our virtual multimedia presentation formats, combining live and on-demand sessions and real-time Q&A sessions with presenters. Other new features will include a AES Show Product Launch  and virtual Tech Tours, visiting legendary studios across the globe

Early Bird rates are $99 for AES Members and $224 for non-members – the latter including one year of AES membership.

SMPTE Says ‘Game On’ to Remote Show

White Plains, NY (June 22, 2020) — SMPTE 2020, the organization’s annual technical conference and exhibition, which this year is themed “Game On,” with one full day focused on the convergence of esports/gaming and media technology, will be presented as an interactive and immersive remote experience on November 10 through 12.

“By eliminating traditional barriers to participation such as travel, the cost of accommodation, and scheduling conflicts, we’re making SMPTE 2020 a broadly accessible and truly global conference,” explained SMPTE executive director Barbara Lange. “We look forward to increased participation from all SMPTE Sections around the world.”

SMPTE Revises IMF Standards

The immersive environment will incorporate a main conference hub, meeting rooms for a chance to “ask the experts,” theater space for sessions and the annual Awards Gala, and an exhibition hall with private meeting space. SMPTE 2020 will offer flexibility in accessing technical presentations, practical hands-on training, product and technology demonstrations, peer-group discussions, virtual panels, and sponsored roundtable discussions, as well as networking events, social hours, and even trivia and esports competitions.

Like last year’s conference, SMPTE 2020 will include the SMPTE Storytellers series, expanded technical tutorials and training, and programming from SMPTE partners. New content will include bite-sized keynotes, quick “Standards 101” sessions, and shorter hot-topic discussions that allow attendees to build a custom conference experience that suits their own schedules and interests.

While they can join live sessions, meetings, and demos throughout the conference, attendees also will have on-demand access to recorded presentations, exhibitor videos and product guides, and more. Presenting their technologies in interactive booths with virtual demo rooms, exhibitors will be able to leverage their own resources — rather than those of a conventional exhibition hall — to optimize the experience for their prospects and customers. Without space constraints of a physical booth, the potential for bigger, higher-quality demos will let exhibitors make more meaningful connections with attendees. Given the ease at which professionals around the world can partake in SMPTE 2020, exhibitors can take advantage of the 24-hour exhibit hall.

Alongside traditional sponsorship opportunities, sponsors will have the option to provide attendees with unique VIP experiences such as behind-the-scenes tours, interactive activities with celebrity hosts, and more. Companies can also design an occasion to bring attendees together for lighthearted fun via remote interaction.

SMPTE will once again host its annual Awards Gala during the conference, bringing together honorees and guests from around the world to celebrate the accomplishments of our industry luminaries and next-generation leaders.
