Mix of the Week – Henry Saiz

This week’s mix come courtesy of Henry Saiz, recorded live at The Bow, Buenos Aires, 6th August 2022

Henry Saiz is the creator of a style that is a combination of his love for all things electronic with a deep passion for art. His music, as well as his work as a sound designer for film and TV has always been marked as forward thinking in approach and groundbreaking upon delivery. Henry’s sound refuses to fall into a singular category, he takes in influence on many different levels and incorporates this into his live and DJ sets by forging a perfect balance of Electronica, Disco, House and Techno.

Henry’s first productions were released through the highly regarded Global Underground and Paradigm Musik imprints. These releases were instantly noticed by house giant John Digweed, which led to creating one of the biggest tracks of 2009, which was also named as Pete Tong’s Essential New Tune. Released on Bedrock, Henry’s remix of Guy J’s “Lamur” was regarded by critics and DJ’s alike as “the track of the year”. Following the success of this remix, yet another giant label; Renaissance commissioned the release of “Artificial Paradises EP” and “Madre Noche EP” in 2009 and “The Rider EP” in 2010.

Not a man to be content with such success, Henry whilst producing some of the biggest tracks around has also simultaneously been developing his live show. Using a combination of Native software and hardware, an Akai APC-40, Access Virus TI and other equipment, Henry has complete control over his meticulously created and fully original edits, loops and tracks. The integration of these techniques into his highly acclaimed podcast “The Labyrinth” and both live and DJ environments has allowed Henry to show his true potential in building sets that strike a chord with audiences across the world. His rising reputation earned Henry the honour of being asked to mix Balance Music’s 019 compilation.

Following on from the likes of Timo Maas, Joris Voorn, Will Saul and Agoria, Henrys addition to this world-renowned mix series has more than lived up to expectations and has set a new benchmark in depth and quality. Whilst being a producer, DJ and live performer is paramount to Henry, another element close to his heart is finding and developing new talent. Henry started his own label, Natura Sonoris (Nature Of Sound) in 2008 and it has become a platform for not only his own productions but also for artists such as Damabiah, Cora Novoa, Sistema and Ryan Davis to name but a few.

The focus of the label is to connect electronic music with art and life. This is reflected in all aspects of each release from the music itself down to the artwork, a formula that has been received extremely well and now has a big following worldwide. September 2012 sees the release of his new single – Henry Saiz ‘Our Discovery’, which has been garnering a huge following this summer on the white isle, with supporters including Lee Foss, Sasha, Audiofly, Blond:ISH and many others.

Mix of the Week – Luke Slater

Iconic techno UK DJ / Producer Luke Slater comes in hard with a mix recntly hosted on Germany’s Spandau20 label mix series.

Luke Slater has concentrated on techno since the beginning of the 1990s. Born in Reading and raised in Horley, Slater’s early sound dalliances with his father’s reel to reel tape recorder and his drumming stints led to work in local record shops, including Jelly Jam in Brighton.

By 1988, Slater was immersed in the embryonic acid house scene, DJing in London’s Heaven nightclub. Slater began releasing original tracks under various monikers, and his single debut came in 1989 with “Momentary Vision”. Releases followed on DJax as Clementine, on General Production Recordings as 7th Plain, and as Morganistic (with Alan Sage), and especially on Peacefrog Records, with nearly a dozen of releases as The X-Tront and as Planetary Assault Systems. After releasing four albums on Peacefrog, he issued 1997’s Freek Funk and Wireless two years later. His tracks “All Exhale” (2000) and “Nothing At All” (2002) reached #74 and #70 respectively in the UK Singles Chart. His first volume of the mix series Fear and Loathing appeared in 2001, on the React label. Alright on Top (2002) was an “album of songs” with vocals from Ricky Barrows and others featured on every track. The second volume of Fear and Loathing appeared in late 2004

Spandau20 is a record label from Berlin founded by FJAAK & friends. The imprint is focusing on artists from the western district Spandau as well as renowned artists from all around the world. The collective delivers jacking warehouse techno and electronic peak time treats, balancing old and new school sounds effortlessly.

The label launches some of Berlin’s young talents from the city’s Techno scene, so watch out :-)! Besides the dancefloor orientated main series the label is kicking off a limited extra series with wider spectrums of music and formats for vinyl nerds and collectors.

The label is also diversifying into other art mediums with their NFT releases. The prestigious Mixtape series features a well equipped range of banging newcomers and certified legends as well. Not to be missed: the collective has been doing events since a decade using different names and identities. They host legendary label nights that offer skillfully researched dj sets and next level hardware live jams.

Mix of the Week – Danny Tenaglia Live at SXM Festival

This week, we present the iconic Danny Tenaglia as our Mix of the Week, live at this years SXM Festival.

The tale of Danny Tenaglia’s love affair with music, and the world’s subsequent romance with him, is one of the critical veins in the body of dance music. He is every dancer’s secret discovery; a random purchase at the record store, a reluctant night out that unexpectedly turned magic. Explosive success came not behind a major label release, or a world tour, or a radio hit remix: It happened when enough people had the private Tenaglia experience for themselves.

The momentum started building in early ’70s New York, when a barely 10-year-old Danny first got the feel of vinyl in his hands. Enthralled by the music of artists like Philly Soul’s The Trammps, Motown’s Marvin Gaye, African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, and disco producer Giorgio Moroder, he started to collect records, plumbing the depths of each one, and frequently finding that he preferred the B-side to the A. It was 1979 when he discovered legendary nightclub Paradise Garage, where DJ Larry Levan’s rich, genre-less blend of music seemed to mirror his own “no boundaries” policy. It was here where Danny found the club model he would one day emulate: Levan’s bold style, the venue’s plain décor, and the party’s warmth and inclusiveness.

‘Set on the paradise island of Saint-Martin / Sint-Maarten, featuring the creme of international DJs and electronic music talent, SXM Festival prides it itself upon drawing the most discerning crowd of music lovers. A reaction to large, faceless festivals around the world, year one of SXM saw an influential group of dancefloor aficionados – who value and respect the scene’s history and culture – come together in beautiful surroundings to dance together and experience the joys of one of the Caribbean’s most fun and friendly locations.’
