Halfway into the second day of T.H.E. Show 2022, our reporting team and I were lounging in the Hilton’s downstairs restaurant as we waited for the lull of the afternoon to pass. As we strategized our afternoon between bites of french fries and diet coke, a friend we had met at T.H.E. Show was just in earshot: Michael Vamos of Audio Skies, a North American Distributor of brands such as Larsen, Gamut, and Ideon. Politely interrupting his own conversation to interrupt ours, Michael leans over to our table and softly shouts above the bustle of clinking glasses and televised sports games, “I have your next interview. You gotta listen to this guy…”

Sitting across from him was Jamie Howarth, unassuming, with eyes immediately discomfited by Michael’s notion. I fail to remember if Michael had just met Jamie at T.H.E. Show or if he and Jamie had met once or twice before, (if you happen to know Michael, you’ll understand his cool demeanor and inviting yet perceptive gaze seems to obfuscate any discernment between an old and new friend). Regardless, Michael persisted, “This guy. Interview him.” Michael’s hitchhiked-thumb and Jamie’s reluctant stare quickly, quietly battled each other.

Finally, Jamie relented with a warm and outstretched hand, ”Jamie.”

Finishing our perfunctory dialogue, we made our way as a group toward Michael’s showroom. Intending to conduct a joint interview featuring the both of them, Michael quickly found himself segueing into a conversation with a visitor peering into his room, leaving Jamie and us to our own devices. After a few minutes, there was a collective, unspoken acknowledgement that Michael wasn’t coming back anytime soon.

And that’s, roughly, where this video begins. Excuse the less-than-ideal audio during this interview. Perhaps I can blame my gorging at our late lunch or the pervasive dreamy jazz which endlessly spilled from the showrooms and into the hallways, whatever the reason for my somnambulistic state, I did not properly connect the wireless microphones’ receiver into the camera, forcing myself into a tedious transcription process. While the captions are not perfect, I am hopeful the essences of Jamie’s words and wisdom are not lost. I am indebted to him for his time and graciousness, and a future clearer-sounding video.
