The Advent returns with new EP on Ben Klock’s Klockworks

Cisco Ferreira’s seminal techno act The Advent returns to Ben Klock’s imprint this May with three distinctly turbo-charged cuts, following his release on the label’s 22nd instalment in 2018.

A pioneer of early British techno, the London-based producer began his career in the halls of the legendary Jack Trax label as a sound engineer, going on to produce cutting edge releases on imprints R&S, Tresor and Transmat. This latest Klockworks release relinquishes the sparse energy of The Advent’s live sets from the 90’s with these previously unreleased timeless live recordings. Favouring off-kilter percussion and warbled bass, all three strike hard with a distorted and visceral energy.

Acid Pauli pays tribute to the modular synthesiser

“Basically my albums have developed into my personal field of experimentation” says Martin Gretschmann, aka Acid Pauli. Known primarily for his psychedelic, leftfield club sounds that weave between slo-mo beats and deep burners, his EPs, remixes and collaborations have generally been more focused on the dancefloor. With his latest album, MOD (his third full-length released on his own Ouie label), Gretschmann goes in a tangential direction, drawing inspiration from modular synthesis and the scene that has flourished around it over the last years. The result is an album produced almost entirely with modular systems, inspired by the possibilities and restrictions of carefully shepherding machines that sing to themselves.

“I know a lot of people who somehow found themselves and electronic music in a boring dead-end alley who have now found completely new worlds through modules”, he explains. Experimental as MOD may be, it certainly isn’t ‘difficult’ or inaccessible or as someone put it, the nine tracks here are “soft, elegant, fluent, dreamy – the tracks achieve the effect of space-time morphing – magical states”.

The album is best heard as one continuous piece, allowing it to unfold its delights gently. Most of the tracks were recorded live in one take, often with Gretschmann recording up to 10 different versions before choosing the final piece.

Propagating Flip Flops starts things off – its glitchy textures and sync-shifting set the scene for the album – the sounds evolving and developing before resolving into a warm, ethereal tone. Intellijel Bell is made up of deep loops of rhythmic sounds, while metallic sounds and a submerged jazzy undertone hint at the classic Acid Pauli sense of fun. Acid On Yusef uses looped up rhythmic pulses and bass tones, joined by modulated beeps and blips. A touch of that iconic liquid acid sound pulls it together and gives the track its name. Sublime Frequencies Of Cairo is another beatless, floating collection of loops that shift and morph, seemingly suspended in space, before an ambient orchestral element resolves the track. As the title suggests, Du Brecht, Ich Dub revolves around abass-heavy sound, building up a rhythm of disparate elements that develop into a tense yet somehow weightless groove.

Life Polarizer is further evidence that an Acid Pauli album will always somehow drift back towards the groove. Thtrack works the effects pretty hard – sounds pinging between left and right and ebbing and flowing into the mix. Peace Waer Schoen also makes heavy use of delay to create a dubbed-out, wonky feel. The freedom of getting away from computer based production is referenced sardonically in Quantize Hell – its bleepy sounds find a rhythm and progression outside of the grid. Finally, No Kick, No Cry brings the journey to a close – it’s the first and only kick drum of the album and adds a structure to the magical unpredictability of the looped sounds.

The album’s artwork perfectly reflects these sounds within, created by musician and artist Billy Caso. Each track is also accompanied by a minimalist video, created with a device from this modular world – the “Vidiot”. It’s clear that in MOD, Gretschmann has produced a homage to the modular scene that might inspire as many people as it delights.

After nearly 15 years, Stripped Digital celebrates reaching a milestone 300 single releases

After 14 years and 11 months Stripped Digital celebrates reaching a milestone 300 single releases. For this special occasion we have returned to the three way collaboration featuring label boss Norman H, Mexican producer 116 db (aka Abel Martinez) and Canadian songstress / dj / producer Amber Long and the track “Take Me”, which started life as a 11-minute Original Vocal Dub released as a stand-alone track in October 2018 which was the labels 250th single release. The Remixes Part I was released last summer featuring interpretations from James Gill, Priya Sen and Aman Anand, The Wash and prolific Moshic.

So now marking the labels 300th we are proud to present four new interpretations from Los Angeles’ Emmanuella who makes a welcome return to the label after here work on Beatfreak and Mango Alley respectively, Power trio Chaum, Hannes Wiehager and the brothers Highjacks who have embedded themselves in the Stripped family this year provide the second mix.

Up next also making a welcomed return is Frenchman Vøsne, a talent we are excited to showcase more in the near future. Finally we return to Mexico where the excellent Replicanth who is no stranger to us completes this fine celebration package. Here’s to another 300.

Global Underground 43 presents Joris Voorn

Featuring over 100 tracks and remixes from Joris Voorn (exclusive), Biosphere, Plastikman, Kölsch, Roman Flügel, Speedy J, Nathan Fake, Secret Cinema, and many more.

Global Underground enters a new decade with a ground-breaking release in the label’s city series: GU43: Joris Voorn, Rotterdam. The GU City albums are synonymous with landmark releases from Carl Cox, Sasha, John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, and many more, and with GU43: Joris Voorn, Rotterdam, the Dutch artist guarantees himself a place in the canon with an astonishing mix that deconstructs, manipulates, and blends over 100 tracks, into one expansive whole.

Included within this mammoth tracklist is ‘Kassandria’, Joris Voorn’s forthcoming single release from GU43 (out 16 October). GU43: Joris Voorn, Rotterdam is available as a 2x CD book pack, 3x heavyweight coloured vinyl, digital, stream, and a limited collector’s edition with 110 page photo book and 4x 12” square art prints. This continued commitment to physical formats, including collectors and limited editions, comes at a time when, during the covid-19 pandemic, Global Underground has seen greater interest and demand for physical music releases.

GU43 follows Joris Voorn’s fourth artist album ‘\\\\’, released in 2019. Inspired by the European electronic scene in the mid 90s, ‘\\\\’ features collaborations with Underworld, Lazarusman, Michiel Bortslap and HÆLOS, and marked a key moment in the continued evolution of one of the Netherland’s most respected electronic music artists. Born in 1977 in Tilburg, a medium-sized city located an hour’s drive south from Rotterdam, Joris Voorn grew up around music (his father was a composer). He swapped violin and acoustic guitar from his childhood when he discovered groups like Nine Inch Nails, Orbital and Underworld; later falling for the Detroit techno of Derrick May, Jeff Mills and Robert Hood

Rotterdam, the city known for darker, harder electronic music – especially gabber and before that neubeat from nearby Belgium – is significant as the birthplace of Voorn’s career: it’s where he threw himself into club culture and made the decision to pursue music first time, and where he made a name for himself across the city, scoring live gigs and DJ gigs, most often at Of Corso Club. His time in the city has helped spawn an incredible DJ career that’s taken him to every corner of the globe, four artist albums, dozens of EPs and singles, several high-profile mixes and compilations, and countless happy fans.

Over the 100-plus strong tracklist, GU43 Joris Voorn, Rotterdam both lays bare the city’s influence on Joris and demonstrates his exhaustive approach to mix albums. Instead of mixing live on vinyl or CDJs, Voorn uses Ableton to edit, arrange or otherwise alter his songs, creating mixes that are as precise and calculated as they are emotional and timeless. It’s a method he’s been using since his mix for Fuse in 2005, but that was perfected on his infamous Balance 014 compilation in 2009, which saw him blending loops and samples of more than 100 tracks into two mixes.

Not only does Voorn’s Global Underground album go further than any previous mix he’s released, but it does so with a keen eye toward his career birthplace. The mix blends tracks and remixes that Joris has played at modern Rotterdam events like Toffler Festival and Annabel Club, including new music from rising star producers, and old classics that Joris has reinterpreted and now featured exclusively for Global Underground – these nods to the city’s musical past sit alongside contemporary collaborations with Rotterdam artists Secret Cinema and Speedy J.

JORIS VOORN SAID:

“Rotterdam is a city close to my heart, it’s where I started my career as a music producer, and gave me the inspiration to make my first tracks. GU43 takes you on a true journey…. One moment you feel you’re in the industrial Rotterdam harbour, next you’re in the vibrant cultural city centre. Sometimes you’re in a dark tunnel under the river that splits North and South before coming up to the tranquillity of a green park. GU43 is an ode to the city that gave me a life in music.”

‘A Door to Nowhere’ is the second release on Jim Rider’s imprint Signs with all proceeds going to the WHO COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund

Tracks come from a collection of Jim’s friends and handpicked favourite artists from across the world.

We begin with Anjunadeep’s Limara, his track Angelica featured on their Explorations 11 collection and English producer has also featured on Lane 8’s label This Never Happened. ‘Mechanism’ is a solid start to the album with tight, snappy drums are the basis for a smooth delayed groove and a simple yet effective bassline.

Next up is NYC based German musician Nhii. He has established himself as a leading talent with releases on Kindisch, Stil Vor Talent and Klassified to name but a few.

Nhii’s offering ‘Orbital Angular Momentum’ is a cosmic journey created using his expansive collection of synths and hardware. It’s a real epic and wouldn’t sound out of place accompanying any space flight.

We travel to Argentina via Barcelona and Ibiza as duo Bodaishin (HMWL / Magician on Duty and founder of Circle of Life) and Invisiblem4n team up on ‘Malohi’. Tribal chants and plucked strings create a dark and organic atmosphere, a track befitting Burning Man.

We continue our journey around the world to Turkey and meet Gadi Mitrani. Gadi has blessed Lee Burridge and Hoj’s Tale & Tone as well as Seven Villas and his track ‘What Makes Music’ is another melodic masterpiece. A simple synth lead layered with a natural bass and shuffling hi-hats keeps this one firmly on the dancefloor.

Ukranian DJ/producer Nikolina provides us with a sultry, deeper affair on ‘Stay Up’. Having previously released with Lump Records, Anna’s interesting bassline is met with sweeping pads, an evolving arpeggiator and twinkling bells.

We return to London next with Jim Rider (Kindisch, Tale & Tone, XYZ) providing the title track ‘A Door to Nowhere’. A plucked electric guitar gives the track a disco underpinning while string solos and flutes give it a distinctly eastern sound. Synths and marimbas throughout take the track into Todd Terje territory.

From London to Berlin next and mysterious producer NenaHalena (Stil Vor Talent / Elements). ‘Sani Tequile’ is a percussion masterclass. Behind the project is a seasoned creator, musically described as Afro-Brazilian-Berlinian and the track is the perfect mix of humanistic fundamentals, dynamics and progression.

The closer is a beautiful track from another Argentinian duo, Facundo Losardo and Leandro Caceres. The soaring strings and operatic vocal on ‘Anaan’ lead the track and are backed up by sweeping pads, a progressive bassline and relaxed drums. A fitting end to the album.

Release date is Friday 7th August on Signs [SIGNS002] You can buy the release here.

Fur Coat announce their first release on Renaissance with their single ‘Hurricane’

‘Hurricane’ is the first single to be taken from Fur Coat’s upcoming album, ‘Polyphony’ (due October), and features the vocal talents of Running Pine who came to prominence last year on Mind Against’s ‘Trust My Eyes’.

The original version of ‘Hurricane’ also marks a double first as it sees the Fur Coat duo, Sergio and Israel exploring new sounds.

“There’s a more indie, electronic vibe to ‘Hurricane’,” explains Sergio, “because it’s from the upcoming album we had the scope to experiment more.”

“It’s still us though,” continues Israel, “I think it maintains the melodies and groovy elements that characterise our sound.”

And the good news is the release doesn’t stop there. If bass guitar and Running Pine’s haunting vocals aren’t your thing, the guys have kindly contributed a dubbier, club mix, which really is Fur Coat in all their melodic techno glory. “If the original is more for the day, the clue is in the title of this mix; we specifically produced it for the peak, night time dancefloors,” Fur Coat confirm.

Last, but by no means least, comes Tim Green, who supplies one of the most beautiful remixes you are likely to hear all year. Tim Green has been forging a rich vein of form of late with releases and collaborations including on Sebastian Leger’s Lost Miracle and Lee Burridge’s All Day I Dream, and the Tim Green mix firmly taps into that ethereal, deep sound.

Exclusive Premiere: Pako & Frederik – Xelak (Vector Space Recordings)

Artist: Pako & Frederik
Title: Xelak EP
Label: Vector Space Recordings
Release date: 7th August 2020
Genre: Melodic Techno / Progressive House

The second release on Chris Salt’s Vector Space Recordings imprint is from none other than Pako & Frederik. Hailing from The Hague, the Dutch legends’ huge new ‘Xelak EP’ has been picking up serious DJ support from the likes of Hernan Cattaneo, Dubfire, Nick Muir, Issac, Kiz Pattison, Max Graham and Anthony Pappa.

The lead track, ‘Xelak’, keeps building and building – with tough percussion and some seriously twisted hypnotic layers, this track is guaranteed to tear the roof off. The outboard production gear really takes the sub-bass to the next level.

‘Re-Rendered’ is a deeper, atmospheric house track. Having already been championed by Hernan Cattaneo on his Resident radio show, this is a future classic. Finally, ‘Grind On’, really lives up to its name – a tough, grinding, melodic techno monster with a few vocal hits and a sting in its tail, this track brings serious sub-bass energy to the dancefloor.

Early support from Hernan Cattaneo, Dubfire, Nick Muir, Max Graham, Richie Hawtin, and Anthony Pappa.

Tracklist:
1. Xelak
2. Re-Rendered
3. Grind On

‘New Horizons’ is the second single from the forthcoming album, ‘Metamorfosi’ by Joseph Capriati.

True to its title, the track explores directions we’ve never heard before in the music of this Southern Italian producer from Caserta. Escaping the bonds of techno’s cornerstone- the 4/4 kick, ’New Horizons’ embodies the joy of the unknown creating a penetrating exploration into the musical minds of Joseph Capriati and his chosen travel mate on this new adventure, James Senese. The connection between the two producers is evident in the first listen of ‘New Horizons’ with Senese’s sax offering a liberating experience inside Joseph’s deep and down-tempo beat. It seems as though Joseph has captured moments in time from Senese’s illustrious career in Italian music.  From Napoli Centrale to the historical and mythical band of Pino Daniele, the backbone of the famous Neapolitan Sound of the ‘80s a band which broke down the boundaries of Italian fame to become a worldwide reference and helped provide a new take on pop, funk, and jazz.

Of course, Joseph brings his unequivocal talent to the mix, bonding together his innovative underground sound with Senese’s traditional Italian style. Through this unexpected collaboration, a legacy is formed, a musical heritage of Neapolitan and Italian music from respected roots to its dynamic present.

Dimension releases new single: Hatred

‘Hatred’ is the new single from Dimension andtaken from his recently announced debut album. Available from 31 July, it revolves around a spoken-word vocal from E11E (‘In Bleach’, ‘Techno’, and ‘If You Want To’). ‘Hatred’s’ motifs are youth, frustration and oppression; born from a release of anger, it’s a musical story that forms a miserable work of art.

The second single from one of the most eagerly awaited electronic music debuts of 2020, ‘Hatred’ follows ‘Saviour’, co-written with Jem Cooke (Camelphat ‘Breathe’) and featuring Sharlene Hector. Dimension’s first album track has so far had over 1 million global streams with huge support from Radio 1 (Annie Mac, MistaJam, Adele Roberts, Rene La Vice), and as well as being featured in Spotify playlists New Music Friday UK, Massive Dance Hits, he was made cover star of New Dance Revolution. Dimension celebrated the release of ‘Saviour’ with a special livestream event featuring top of the range production from a secret UK venue.

The debut album reveal comes after an incredible year in 2019. DIMENSION LIVE, his sold out debut live show at London’s prestigious Electric Brixton in October, attracted critical acclaim from Mixmag, RA, DJ Mag, Red Bull, and beyond. The first immersive, multi-sensory experience in dance music, the show debuted Dimension’s showpiece glass mechanical structure – the centrepiece of a production that included a 50-piece state-of-the-art lighting system, laser walls, the largest ever LED screen to be installed in the venue, pyrotechnics and for the first time in a live music environment, scentology.

Followed closely by his debut BBC Radio One Essential Mix, DIMENSION LIVE capped 12 months that began with the success of ‘Desire’, his collaboration with Sub Focus. The record’s list of achievements is near endless; it spent 9 weeks on Radio 1’s playlist (5 on the A-list), has amassed over 50 million global streams to date and has been certified a silver single in the UK by BPI (200,000 sales). Following ‘Desire’ came Dimension’s next string of solo releases, ‘Devotion’ featuring Cameron Hayes, ‘If You Want To’ and‘Love To Give’ which all rapidly picked up midweek Annie Mac support alongside BBC Radio 1 plays from Phil Taggart’s Hype Chart, Mistajam and Rene LaVice; and together, combining in over 20 million g lobal streams to date.

On the live front, having begun last summer at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, Dimension toured worldwide including Australia and New Zealand, North America and a return to Ibiza for another Amnesia residency at Together. Other notable appearances included Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, Creamfields, EDC Las Vegas, Audioriver, Dreambeach, and Beats For Love. Further shows will be announced in due course, which will include a headline LIVE show at the groundbreaking Printworks London.

Dimension’s combination of seemingly effortless musicality and production prowess first caught the attention of producers and DJs such as Andy C, Sub Focus, Chase & Status, Annie Mac (5x Hottest Records), Skrillex (who remixed the much-lauded ‘UK’), and deadmau5. What was once one of dance music’s best kept secrets, but now with a rapidly growing global profile, Dimension is fast becoming one of the UK’s most notable – and intriguing – artists.
