“Be authentic, start small, and realise you can make good music even with just a few good samples” – Ian O’Donovan

It’s been a decade since Ian O’Donovan truly announced his arrival on the scene with his sublime Aurora Borealis EP on Bedrock. Undoubtedly a pivotal moment in the Irish producer’s career, his rich melodies immediately caught the ear offering something distinctly different from many of his contemporaries in the techno mainstream. It is not a stretch to say his reputation for being a master of emotive melodies and soaring strings is now probably second to none in the industry. With his inimitable sounds having found homes on major labels as varied as Drumcode, KMS and Last Night On Earth. Ten years on and with O’Donovan firmly established within the electronic community he releases his first long player on the excellent XYZ label. I decided it was finally time to catch up with the Irish producer to find out more about the inspiration behind this masterful album.

I began by congratulating him on the album and asking about how he approached the long player format. “It is definitely different to making club tracks,” he says confirming that he didn’t see the point in making a ten track techno or ‘dancefloor’ album. “I started out with an idea to make a mostly deep, string lead project but I realised after a while that a more eclectic project might be more exciting to showcase different sides of my sound”. He expands on the process pinpointing the collaborative role of the label as a helpful factor “I had planned on releasing the album myself and had most of the tracks made but it was a daunting task. After working on the EP with them (XYZ), I thought it could be a good platform for this project and I felt they could help add to it”. It seems the collaboration proved effective at shaping the album into a more coherent whole “It was good to get input and other ideas on the direction of the album from enthusiastic outsiders and I’m really happy with how it turned out”.

And so he should be ‘Still Waters’ is an accomplished and well balanced album that is at turns both evocative, introspective, and upbeat. The trademark melancholic strings are there on cue sweeping dramatically into tracks such as the brooding and magnificent ‘Run Deep’ before segueing seamlessly into the deeper house melodics of tracks like ‘Sakura’. The LP is at times cinematic and expansive but equally able to shift gears and head to the dancefloor for adrenaline fuelled peak time euphoria. It hangs as a complete picture of an artist who has mastered his craft, the content brilliantly bookended by two slices of immersive ambience in the ocean wash of ‘Landfall’ and icy fm drift of ‘World Away (Exit)’

Curiously there is a strand of natural imagery which seems to permeate the album both in many of the titles and also in rich organic textures and forays into found sounds. Whilst many techno works seem content to explore dystopian themes, ‘Still Waters’ seems to draw on other influences to feed it’s sonic palette. We continued by talking about the inspirations at play behind the album and discussed whether ‘nature’ was a deliberate concept being explored. “Yes. I’m glad you recognised from the titles and feel of the tracks. I tried to keep to a general earth theme and adventures within that”. However, it seems that the power and beauty of the natural world was not the only influence with O’Donovan revealing that a period of binging on spy novels had inspired the moody widescreen atmospherics of tracks such as ‘Sentient City’ ‘the Aftermath’ ‘Fallen Reign’ and ‘Run Deep’.

We move on to discuss the process of the making of the latter track, whose cinematic soundscape, staccato strings and live drum stylings see him exploring some new musical territory as a producer. I ask him if this was a conscious decision.

“I wanted the album to show different sides of my production…electronica, breakbeat and ambient tracks to give an ebb and flow throughout.”

He goes on to reveal that those prominent live drums are not actually live at all “I used Logic’s Drummer feature. I then cut loads of these up with some other samples to create an organic feel”. O’Donovan successfully creates this warm almost jazzy breaks feel on a number of the key pieces and it’s a sound that no doubt a certain Laurent Garnier would be nodding his head in approval of. The Irish producer is quick to acknowledge his influence and support over the years “Laurent was probably the biggest influence on my sound both as a DJ and producer so when he started playing my tracks regularly before I had anything even signed, that was the ultimate gratification for me”. He describes contacting Garnier back in 2009 on a new platform ‘Soundcloud’ and how within weeks Garnier was playing and tweeting about his tracks ultimately creating a domino of connections and conversations leading to his signing to Bedrock.

Digging deeper into his musical history he reveals that his early adventures in DJing and producing starting out with him playing with his Dad’s “double tape deck on this ‘cool’ Sony system’ then layering it with ‘guitars and playing drums on a lunchbox”. He singles out The Prodigy as having a transformative effect in his teenage years “it was probably the whole Prodigy sound that was a segue for me and many others I know”. I quiz him on whether his ear for melodies is the result of classical training but he places the emphasis on experimentation rather than any in depth musical knowledge “I played the guitar a bit when I was younger. I also did a course in music for film and games a few years ago”. However, he concedes that music theory “still bores me to tears” and that it is all done by ear and experimentation running sequences through his hybrid set up of software and hardware. “I try to make a simple, more stripped back track and then I try a synth and think oh that sounds good and can’t help myself” he laughs.

“I can’t stop myself trying different loops through different synths and seeing where it takes me!”

Nowadays, he considers himself primarily as a producer but his Proton radio shows still deliver consistently, showcasing his ability as a DJ to effortlessly straddle genres as he journeys through progressive melodic builders, deep Detroit numbers and raw techno jackers. Despite his focus on production he has had time to hook up with the Kepler crew for a live DJ stream an experience he describes as “cool” and format that “could be a more popular platform now that people have got used to the idea of seeing Djs regularly play online”. However he goes on to add that “nothing compares to getting together with other people and experiencing music collectively” and believes that a post Covid scene may involve more “open air events, limiting capacity in venues, live streaming of DJ sets to venues for those that can’t travel. I guess we just have to get more creative!” Despite the doom and gloom cast over the scene by the current situation, he is hopeful that it may allow the industry to take stock. He is quick to speak out in support of John Digweed’s recent comments on streaming services.

“I agree that artists should be paid more from streaming and video play as their whole service is based on artist output so without artists they have no service. It definitely should be a fairer more symbiotic relationship…”

He goes on to explain how he hopes artists will continue to dig deep to find “innovative” ways to get their sound out there and “rethink how we experience music”.

He ends with a few wise words for emerging producers telling them not to even think about the labels but rather to…

“…be authentic, start small, and realise you can make good music even with just a few good samples.”

He says that he is currently “flat out” with production partnerships coming not only with Luca Gaeta and an album remix package but also with two of his favourite major artists. It’s O’Donovan’s own distinct and melodic style that has seen him stand out from the crowd over the years and in ‘Still Waters’ he delivers a masterclass in how to evoke emotions and warmth from his machines. The shimmering chords and ever-fluctuating arps of the album prove a rewarding home listening experience tied together fluently as a conceptual whole. No mean feat to accomplish when you consider the long player form is arguably a dying breed in modern music culture where tracks seemingly have such a finite shelf life. ‘Still Waters’ draws on inspiration from the powerful yet fragile world around us, a lesson we should all take heed of. It is techno with heart and soul and that is exactly what we need is these dark and uncertain days.

The Advent returns with new EP on Ben Klock’s Klockworks

Cisco Ferreira’s seminal techno act The Advent returns to Ben Klock’s imprint this May with three distinctly turbo-charged cuts, following his release on the label’s 22nd instalment in 2018.

A pioneer of early British techno, the London-based producer began his career in the halls of the legendary Jack Trax label as a sound engineer, going on to produce cutting edge releases on imprints R&S, Tresor and Transmat. This latest Klockworks release relinquishes the sparse energy of The Advent’s live sets from the 90’s with these previously unreleased timeless live recordings. Favouring off-kilter percussion and warbled bass, all three strike hard with a distorted and visceral energy.

Carl Cox steps up for exclusive Awesome Soundwave mix

Label boss and global DJ legend Carl Cox steps up to the decks once again, only this time to create a compelling mix comprising exclusively of Awesome Soundwave releases – out August 28thThe release coincides with a special Awesome Soundwave stream with Mysteryland Festival on August 29, which includes a set from Carl.

Carl’s sets are renowned for diversity, innovation and his ever-present dance floor propulsion and this exclusive ASW set is further evidence of the irrepressible and exuberant nature of one of the world’s greatest DJs.

“When we started this label I wanted it to be about supporting live artists”, says Carl “You know, the ones who are willing to explore new sounds and ideas from the ground up and then go out and play it all absolutely LIVE! I feel this is the way of the future, the excitement and rawness of a live set can’t be described in words. When you go to a party and see Saytek jamming with all the machines or Honeysmack set up IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DANCEFLOOR slamming the acid bangers out rapid fire it brings me back to the old days when there were no rules.””

“I felt it was a good time to release this mix as a document of where we are at right now, it shows the diversity of sound and talent we have already been supporting and it’s a nice personal record of how far the label has come already! and there is so much more to come!”

Originally recorded for the Awesome Soundwave LIVE series presented by Beatport as an online festival earlier in the year, Carl felt this set was a great reflection of the strength of the material released so far through his and partner Christopher Coe’s label.

This set is a celebration of how far ASW has come in the last two years and a signpost to even more exciting music ahead. With tracks from every artist who has released on ASW thus far, and presented by Carl in such an exciting and different way, it shows how musically diverse, uncompromising and interesting the label is. In a time when many labels are following the formula of releasing EPs from producer DJs, ASW stands alone in its quest to shine a light on artists who perform live and who have something more to say in their creative scope.

The fact that ASW insists on releasing albums in a time when everyone else is focussed on single EPs and single tracks shows the commitment this label has to giving the artist room for expression that goes beyond the dance floor. This is Carl’s vision, he didn’t want to start another DJ led label, he wanted to create something altogether more expansive and encompassing.

Starting in 2018 with Christopher Coe’s album MNTNS of SLNC as the benchmark for this new vision, Carl and Christopher set about creating something awesome. And here we are.

We are proud to present Awesome Soundwave

Cafe Mambo returns for 2020

Legendary Ibiza venue Café Mambo has launched its long-awaited summer 2020 season. The fabled pre-party hotspot commenced the season on 17th July, and has hosted performances from the likes of MK, Darius Syrossian and Jonas Blue, with a further array of world-class DJ talent confirmed for the coming weeks.

In order to comply with Covid-19 regulations and keep guests safe, Café Mambo will be deploying a table service-only policy for the new season, with advanced table bookings essential for attendance.
International stars will be gracing the booth throughout the season, however this year the lineup will be kept as a surprise, with the DJs to be revealed exclusively to guests upon arrival to the venue. With the likes of Darius Syrossian, MK and most recently Jonas Blue gracing the decks at the famed White Isle spot, the new table service-only policy enables guests the opportunity to see some of the biggest acts on the island in an intimate setting, be it over sunset cocktails or delicious food.

Set in the heart of San Antonio, Café Mambo is recognised for its unrivalled sunset views. It was created during the 90s house music heyday and received instant recognition, being named ‘Bar of the Year’ by GQ. DJs began to frequent the bar requesting to play on the decks and before long regular sets included the biggest names in dance music playing at the now celebrated sunset ‘pre-party’.

Last year marked 25 years as the White Isle’s ultimate idyllic haven, with the venue welcoming the likes of Fatboy SlimMartin Solveig, Eric Prydz and Claptone across the summer months. Expect a similarly star-studded list of guests for their first season of the new decade.

With exclusive, intimate performances from some of the best DJs worldwide and unrivalled sunsets, Café Mambo has commenced yet another life-affirming summer season. Booking is essential, make sure to reserve a table at the White Isle’s most prominent establishment.

Global Underground 43 presents Joris Voorn

Featuring over 100 tracks and remixes from Joris Voorn (exclusive), Biosphere, Plastikman, Kölsch, Roman Flügel, Speedy J, Nathan Fake, Secret Cinema, and many more.

Global Underground enters a new decade with a ground-breaking release in the label’s city series: GU43: Joris Voorn, Rotterdam. The GU City albums are synonymous with landmark releases from Carl Cox, Sasha, John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, and many more, and with GU43: Joris Voorn, Rotterdam, the Dutch artist guarantees himself a place in the canon with an astonishing mix that deconstructs, manipulates, and blends over 100 tracks, into one expansive whole.

Included within this mammoth tracklist is ‘Kassandria’, Joris Voorn’s forthcoming single release from GU43 (out 16 October). GU43: Joris Voorn, Rotterdam is available as a 2x CD book pack, 3x heavyweight coloured vinyl, digital, stream, and a limited collector’s edition with 110 page photo book and 4x 12” square art prints. This continued commitment to physical formats, including collectors and limited editions, comes at a time when, during the covid-19 pandemic, Global Underground has seen greater interest and demand for physical music releases.

GU43 follows Joris Voorn’s fourth artist album ‘\\\\’, released in 2019. Inspired by the European electronic scene in the mid 90s, ‘\\\\’ features collaborations with Underworld, Lazarusman, Michiel Bortslap and HÆLOS, and marked a key moment in the continued evolution of one of the Netherland’s most respected electronic music artists. Born in 1977 in Tilburg, a medium-sized city located an hour’s drive south from Rotterdam, Joris Voorn grew up around music (his father was a composer). He swapped violin and acoustic guitar from his childhood when he discovered groups like Nine Inch Nails, Orbital and Underworld; later falling for the Detroit techno of Derrick May, Jeff Mills and Robert Hood

Rotterdam, the city known for darker, harder electronic music – especially gabber and before that neubeat from nearby Belgium – is significant as the birthplace of Voorn’s career: it’s where he threw himself into club culture and made the decision to pursue music first time, and where he made a name for himself across the city, scoring live gigs and DJ gigs, most often at Of Corso Club. His time in the city has helped spawn an incredible DJ career that’s taken him to every corner of the globe, four artist albums, dozens of EPs and singles, several high-profile mixes and compilations, and countless happy fans.

Over the 100-plus strong tracklist, GU43 Joris Voorn, Rotterdam both lays bare the city’s influence on Joris and demonstrates his exhaustive approach to mix albums. Instead of mixing live on vinyl or CDJs, Voorn uses Ableton to edit, arrange or otherwise alter his songs, creating mixes that are as precise and calculated as they are emotional and timeless. It’s a method he’s been using since his mix for Fuse in 2005, but that was perfected on his infamous Balance 014 compilation in 2009, which saw him blending loops and samples of more than 100 tracks into two mixes.

Not only does Voorn’s Global Underground album go further than any previous mix he’s released, but it does so with a keen eye toward his career birthplace. The mix blends tracks and remixes that Joris has played at modern Rotterdam events like Toffler Festival and Annabel Club, including new music from rising star producers, and old classics that Joris has reinterpreted and now featured exclusively for Global Underground – these nods to the city’s musical past sit alongside contemporary collaborations with Rotterdam artists Secret Cinema and Speedy J.

JORIS VOORN SAID:

“Rotterdam is a city close to my heart, it’s where I started my career as a music producer, and gave me the inspiration to make my first tracks. GU43 takes you on a true journey…. One moment you feel you’re in the industrial Rotterdam harbour, next you’re in the vibrant cultural city centre. Sometimes you’re in a dark tunnel under the river that splits North and South before coming up to the tranquillity of a green park. GU43 is an ode to the city that gave me a life in music.”

Pioneer DJ release Distant Dancefloors: COVID-19 and the Electronic Music Industry

Pioneer DJ releases Distant Dancefloors exploring the global impact of COVID-19 on the electronic music scene. As the world ventures into the ‘new normal’, Pioneer DJ presents a 360° view of the economical, psychological and social impact COVID-19 has had on global club culture.

Overnight, the music was made to stop; venues were forced to close, festivals and live events cancelled, and thousands of livelihoods put in jeopardy. Distant Dancefloors goes back to the beginning when the virus took hold; the first warnings, global realisation and the resulting lockdown.

Sharing their reflections of the last six months, the film features commentary from international DJs such as Blond:ish, Eats Everything, Honey Dijon, Luciano and Rebuke as well as industry insiders including Kevin Watson, Author of the International Music Summit Business Report & Paul Reed the Association of Festivals, artist managers and fans. Analyzing the combined experience of those interviewed, Distant Dancefloors explores how the industry first reacted and has begun to adapt.

Blond:ish comments: “It is unfortunate the situation that we are in but we adapt, that’s what we do, that’s our human nature. The question is, how are we adapting as a music industry? And, how are we going to come back and solidify a new sustainable foundation as an industry and be innovative for everyone else, to be an example?”

In the film, we hear the contrasting opinions of artists as they look to respond to the crisis giving their view on the future of the industry. Will video streaming become the new normal? Will streaming remain popular once we return to clubs? Is this a chance to change the industry for the better? What has been the impact felt by the hundreds and thousands of people whose livelihoods depend on the industry? Can the dancefloor exist in a time of social distancing? Distant Dancefloors investigates.

Engine OS v1.5 also adds a new highly accurate BPM detection algorithm, a new Quick Source Menu for faster music source switching, new microphone capabilities for Smart Consoles, as well as a number of additional usability improvements and stability enhancements. By taking Denon DJ’s standalone performance functionality and combining it with the powerful music libraries of Beatport, LINK subscribers can enjoy limitless performance possibilities. Denon DJ Engine OS powered products include SC6000, SC6000M, SC5000, SC5000M, PRIME 4, PRIME 2 and PRIME GO.

Additional software and hardware integrations as well as some new exciting features are expected to be rolled out throughout the remainder of 2020 and into 2021.

Beatport LINK is currently available in 3 tiers; basic LINK with 128 Kbps AAC streaming and full track playback on the Store for $14.99 per month; LINK PRO with 256 Kbps AAC streaming, full track playback on the Store, and a 50 track Offline Locker for $29.99 per month; and LINK PRO+ with 256 Kbps AAC streaming, full track playback on the Store, and a 100 track Offline Locker for $44.99 per month.

Following shortly after the Beatport LINK integration will be Beatsource LINK, providing a diverse collection of hit music for the open-format DJ.

Beatsource’s President, Brian Wong, stated “This is the future of DJing. Imagine showing up to your gig with just a pair of headphones and your DJ skills, logging into the Denon gear, and your personal playlists and DJ library become instantly available.”

Both Denon DJ and Beatport are committed to continuing the evolution of this groundbreaking new DJ technology and will incorporate LINK’s patented Offline Locker, allowing LINK PRO and PRO+ users to store between 50 and 100 tracks offline and perform on their Engine OS enabled products without an Internet connection for the first time in history. Beatport’s Offline Locker will be released in the coming months along with a Beatsource integration, specializing in open-format DJing, for subscribers of Beatsource LINK, LINK PRO, and PRO+.
