Underworld announced for Teenage Cancer Trust at The Royal Albert Hall

Teenage Cancer Trust’s historic annual Royal Albert Hall concert series returns for 2023 with another unique line-up at one of the world’s most prestigious venues. Announced today are headliners Underworld, Wet Leg, Courteeners and Kasabian, with an Evening Of Comedy line-up to be announced soon, performing from 20th – 25th March 2023.

For two decades the iconic concert series has featured the best in music and comedy, raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust and driven by Teenage Cancer Trust Honorary Patron and The Who icon, Roger Daltrey.

Artists announced for 2023 include some of the biggest UK acts around….

Underworld are one of the greatest electronic artists the UK has ever produced and will play a highly anticipated show on Monday 20th March.

They came from acid house pioneering to national treasure status with a series of peerless albums. Their legendary live show is a sensory adventure, their beats taking their audience to ever-ascending heights of euphoria. The group were propelled to new heights by ‘Born Slippy’, an Underworld B-side that soundtracked Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting movie. Karl Hyde and Rick Smith continued to work in film, as well as remixing and DJ-ing, and were musical directors for the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.

They recently picked up 4 BRIT Award nominations and 5 Grammy nods and their self-titled, Number 1 debut album was Mercury Prize nominated, while Rolling Stone called them the “buzziest band of the year.” Having penned wry hits like ‘Chaise Longue’ and ‘Wet Dream’, 2023 will see Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers play at the BRITs, tour the world with Harry Styles, and perform for us at the Royal Albert Hall.

Joining Wet Leg at The Royal Albert Hall is CMAT. A singer-songwriter from Dublin, her debut album If My Wife New I’d Be Dead reached Number 1 in the Irish charts, sharing her latest single ‘Mayday’ earlier this month. Also performing are South London trio Honeyglaze, whose self-titled debut record was released last year.

Manchester’s musical phenomenon Courteeners are back for a third time, their second headline performance for Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday 24th March, to play their number one album St. Jude in full. Just a few weeks ago, the lauded album reached Number 1 for the very first time with its 15th anniversary edition and became the album with the longest time between release and charting at Number 1 in UK chart history, according to the Official Charts Company. They have no less than 7 other Top 10 albums – only The Rolling Stones and The Beatles have had a reissued album at Number 1 before. Serge Pizzorno, bassist Chris Edwards, drummer Ian Matthews and guitarist Tim Carter have won multiple awards for their live performances and consistently sell-out tours – expect an amazing show fuelled by their trademark swagger.

Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall enters its 21st edition as one of the greatest music events on the calendar, after a triumphant, post-COVID 20th edition in 2022 that featured a once-in-a-lifetime acoustic show from The Who, one of the world’s biggest pop stars Ed Sheeran, a barnstorming show from Liam Gallagher, a new generation hero in YUNGBLUD, hometown royalty Madness, and a stomping show from rockers Don Broco. Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to providing specialised nursing care and support for young people with cancer.

Pressures on the NHS are making it harder than ever for young people to get a timely diagnosis and treatment. Cancer waits over 62 days have doubled since before the pandemic, and many young people will face the insecurity of not knowing when they will see a specialist or start their treatment.

Meanwhile, young people are also being disproportionately affected by the cost of living crisis, as they contend with a combination of high rents, soaring bills, student debt, and falling real-term wages.

For young people with cancer, both these issues can cause added anxiety and further impact their mental health. In such conditions, being able to access the right advice and support at the right time – including emotional and psychological support – is more vital than ever.

Since 2000, over £32 million has been raised by Teenage Cancer Trust concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, and that money has helped fund specialist nurses, hospital units and support services right across the UK that help get young people through some unimaginably hard times.

This year also sees the return of the Ultimate Backstage Experience for young people being cared for at Teenage Cancer Trust units around the country. Every day, these groups will visit the Royal Albert Hall to enjoy an unforgettable experience. From the moment they arrive, they’ll enjoy access and opportunities that money can’t buy, before taking their place in some of the best seats in the house to watch the shows in style.

Ever since The Who reformed for the first Teenage Cancer Trust Royal Albert Hall show in 2000, the annual events have witnessed some extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime shows from Noel Gallagher and Damon Albarn performing together for the first time ever in 2013, Sir Paul McCartney in 2012, plus the likes of Oasis, Muse, Niles Rodgers & CHIC, Florence + The Machine and many more. Meanwhile, young people are also being disproportionately affected by the cost of living crisis, as they contend with a combination of high rents, soaring bills, student debt, and falling real-term wages.

For young people with cancer, both these issues can cause added anxiety and further impact their mental health. In such conditions, being able to access the right advice and support at the right time – including emotional and psychological support – is more vital than ever.

Since 2000, over £32 million has been raised by Teenage Cancer Trust concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, and that money has helped fund specialist nurses, hospital units and support services right across the UK that help get young people through some unimaginably hard times.

This year also sees the return of the Ultimate Backstage Experience for young people being cared for at Teenage Cancer Trust units around the country. Every day, these groups will visit the Royal Albert Hall to enjoy an unforgettable experience. From the moment they arrive, they’ll enjoy access and opportunities that money can’t buy, before taking their place in some of the best seats in the house to watch the shows in style.

Ever since The Who reformed for the first Teenage Cancer Trust Royal Albert Hall show in 2000, the annual events have witnessed some extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime shows from Noel Gallagher and Damon Albarn performing together for the first time ever in 2013, Sir Paul McCartney in 2012, plus the likes of Oasis, Muse, Niles Rodgers & CHIC, Florence + The Machine and many more. Some of the brightest lights in comedy have lit up the stage too, with an annual evening featuring the likes of Mo Gilligan, Kevin Bridges, Miranda Hart, Kerry Godliman, John Bishop, Frankie Boyle, Noel Fielding, Jon Richardson, Russell Howard, Russell Brand, James Corden and many more.

Junction 2 festival announces location, line up and dates

Returning to their original home, the inimitable Boston Manor Park, this year’s edition is set to be the boldest Junction 2 yet, as the team gather their energy from recent years to present a revitalised Junction 2. This event plans to go beyond what has come before it. With new stage designs, updated location and a vision for its long future.

Having confirmed a host of familiar favourites alongside new members of the Junction 2 family, this year will see a renewed focus on alliances, with DJs delivering spellbinding back to back sets. The pairings have all been chosen to allow the artists to fully express themselves, creating a truly unique experience, both in the booth and on the dancefloor.

Split over two days, Junction 2 has announced 23 acts from across the electronic spectrum. Friday will see Underworld, Ben UFO b2b Helena Hauff, Daphni b2b Hunee, Dixon, DJ Stingray 313 b2b Objekt, Elkka b2b Sofia Kourtesis, Jeff Mills, KT, Mall Grab b2b Skin on Skin, Midland, Mona Yim, Or:la, Otik, Storm Mollison. Saturday will witness Adam Beyer, Cirez D, Asch Pintura, Astra Club (Carlita B2B DJ Tennis), Charlotte de Witte, Dax J, Enzo Siragusa b2b Dyed Soundorom, Fjaak, Gene On Earth b2b The Ghost, Hessle Audio Trio, Kessie, Margaret Dygas b2b Sonja Moonear, Nina Kraviz, Praslesh (Raresh b2b Praslea), Sama’ Abdulhadi alongside music partners FUSE and ION.

Junction 2 will take place on July 21st and 22nd this year and will finally bring back the Junction 2 family after three postponed festivals. Tickets are available on Tuesday 17th January at 12pm and can be purchased with a £20 deposit as part of a payment plan scheme, providing the perfect opportunity to spread the cost out over the coming months.

Jeff Gray, Promoter at Junction 2 says “Junction 2’s return to Boston Manor Park after four long years is going to make for the most significant moment in the events history. A long-awaited opportunity to get back to our spiritual home and once again experience what is still the best festival site in the Capital. On Friday 21st, Underworld make their long-awaited return to London and their first performance in their home city in four years. Armed with new material alongside the timeless classics released across a near 40 year long career, the influence of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith on electronic music cannot be understated. This exclusive and very special set will be one of the highlights across the weekend. They will be joined by the original Detroit techno icon Jeff Mills, for his long awaited Junction 2 debut. Utilising four decks alongside his trusty 909, Jeff will no doubt take the Junction 2 faithful to places they have never been to before.

Alongside these two titans, J2 have a collection of DJs known for their bold, risk-taking choices behind the decks and dedication to their sound, with many playing back-to-back. These include Helena Hauff and Ben UFO, playing their first B2B for many years; house and disco masters Daphni and Hunee, whose synergy behind the decks is a joy to behold; highly respected technical wizard Objekt, who joins forces with Detroit electro legend DJ Stingray 313, Elkka teams up with Sofia Kourtesis, whilst Mall Grab and Skin on Skin go head to head, bringing with them some of the hardest hitting techno slammers of the day.

Aside from these duos, the bill also features a range of artists holding the fort on their own, including Innervisions head-honcho Dixon, bringing his signature style of house with him. Newcomers include Midland, who is constantly cementing his integral status within UK club culture; Or:la, whose star has not stopped rising since her phenomenal Boiler Room debut back in 2017; producer wunderkind Otik; purveyor of heart-tugging house, plus Mona Yim, KT and Storm Mollison, all of which are hotly tipped for a bumper 2023.

Junction 2’s Saturday will partner with London’s FUSE and exhibit a streamlined display of artists, with particular focus on the realms of techno, minimal and tech-house.

Adam Beyer returns to Junction 2 once again, this time, however, it’s a bit different, as the Drumcode boss goes toe-to-toe with fellow Swede Eric Prydz, under his techno moniker Cirez D. The pair have played together many times across the world before, however this UK festival exclusive is the very first time they have ever done so in the Capital. Expect unadulterated techno carnage and an unforgettable musical experience from two of the best to ever do it.

Charlotte de Witte and Nina Kraviz will also be joining J2, two incredible artists that continue to perform at the highest level. Both in different parts of their career but are equally regarded as leading female tastemakers.

Building on these techno mainstays, this year will also play host to Dax J, a master of the craft in all aspects of his artistry, with near unparalleled commitment to the hardest-hitting techno out there; Sama’ Abdulhadi, who continues to define and redefine the genre through her use of real-world samples and unique productions; Astra Club, the inspired pairing of Carlita and DJ Tennis, who continue to push their hypnotic brand of house to great effect, and German duo FJAAK, who have achieved world-renowned status through their prolific output and online presence.

Further to this, J2 are delighted to be partnering with seminal UK label Hessle Audio. Alongside label heads Ben UFO, Pearson Sound and Pangaea will be an array of DJs known for their forward-thinking attitude to DJing and production, specially curated by the trio themselves, to be announced soon.

Continuing the theme of musical collaboration, FUSE arrive at Junction 2 for their first ever festival stage in their home city. Firstly, FUSE boss Enzo Siragusa, a true tastemaker when it comes to low-slung, bass-heavy tech house, goes B2B with Dyed Soundorom, one of minimal’s most prominent and respected DJs. J2 are also over the moon to have Sonja Moonear and Margaret Dygas, two of the form’s finest selectors, for what’s sure to be a spellbinding display of deftly assembled cuts. Alongside them are the formidable duo that is Raresh and Praslea, performing as Praslesh, plus the deep digging personalities The Ghost B2B Gene on Earth.

Aside from these B2B pairings are Leeds-based Kessie, who brings her eclectic, bass-focused sound to Boston Manor Park for the first time.

Overall, this is Junction 2’s most forward-thinking and varied line-up yet, perfectly suited to today’s open-minded and ever-changing scene. London-based photographer Soulla Petrou brings together the best visual moments from her first 15 years working in the music industry to create a stunning visual coffee table book, ‘Rewind – Journey of a Music Photographer’ with a special introduction written by Alexis Petridis, Head Rock and Pop Critic of The Guardian.

Showcasing Petrou’s unique and original portraiture alongside live performance and clubbing scenes, the book charts her early career shooting emerging talent and evolving musical genres for magazines such as Mixmag, DJ, Touch The Face and Saturday Times.

Featuring an impressive array of artists including dance music pioneers and icons Frankie Knuckles, ‘The Godfather of House’, Orbital, Underworld, General Levy, Goldie, and early pop culture pictures of Geri Halliwell prior to her Spice Girl fame.

Put together over lockdown Rewind was curated from commissioned images amassed over a 28-year career. Showcasing many unpublished and unseen moments in pop and dance capturing, unique moments including Drum & Bass legend Goldie among a crowd of clubbers.

“Editing the images prompted me to ‘rewind’ the memories of those photographic shoots, reviving the positive vibes and generating a feelgood factor that kept me sane during the pandemic” – Soulla Petrou

Rewind provides a chronological overview of the period 1994 to 2009, an eventful stage in Petrou’s career, charting the evolution of her creative style and encompassing the transition from film to digital, hence the subtitle Journey of a Music Photographer.

The legacy of Rewind will be to preserve the memories of the featured musical icons, some of whom have passed away: Frankie Knuckles, Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson, Phil Asher and French producer Phillipe Zdar. While applying the finishing touches to the book, Soulla heard the tragic news that her former Mixmag editor and friend, Dom Phillips had been murdered in the Amazon while trying to shine a light on the plight of indigenous people.

20 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of this book to Univaja, the organisation set up to help the indigenous people of the Javari Valley, the cause Dom championed.

A Kickstarter for ‘Rewind’ has launched for pre-orders running until 30th November.
