Earth Trax lands on Lapsus Records with new album ‘Closer Now’

Bartosz Kruczyński, also known as artist Earth Trax, is arguably among the leading names in Poland’s current electronic music scene. Based in Warsaw, his music is deeply emotive and explores a wide-ranging sonic palette that is complemented by well-defined artistic concepts. He has already featured on labels including Phonica Records, Growing Bin, Into The Light and Shall Not Fade –with whom he released his acclaimed debut album in 2020–.

His Lapsus release ‘Closer Now’, takes a different trajectory to his previous album ‘The Sensual World’ [Shall Not Fade, 2022], fundamentally an energetic and high tempo club record. In contrast, ‘Closer Now’ focuses on fresh and disparate ideas, with tracks that could typically be classified as more unrestrained B-sides that deconstruct sounds aimed at the dancefloor.

‘Closer Now’ is influenced by liminal spaces and cultivates surreal and dreamlike qualities. Conversely it also possesses a sense of strength and grit, highlighted by moments where electronic distortion bares its teeth. It is an album that refers both to IDM and chill out rooms

Released 24 February 2023, Pre-order via Bandcamp

Documentary – The history of sampling and the legalities involved

Copyright Criminals examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money. This documentary traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry.

For more than thirty years, innovative hip-hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions. When lawyers and record companies got involved, what was once referred to as a “borrowed melody” became a “copyright infringement.”

The film showcases many of hip-hop music’s founding figures like Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital Underground—while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers, Ninja Tune, and more

Flevans releases ‘A Short Distance to Fall’ – LP on Jalapeno

Two and a bit years since the release of his last studio album ‘Accumulate’, Flevans returns with his most musically expressive and personal long player, ‘A Short Distance to Fall’.

A largely instrumental album, peppered with lush vocal samples throughout, ‘ASDTF’ is a listening experience to be savoured from start to finish – drawing you in, guiding you through an ever changing musical world, taking in snippets of electronica, disco, funk, beats, soul and downtempo – and delivered with a warm, musical, lo-fi aesthetic.

And so the story goes….the pandemic hit on the eve of the release of Flevans’ last album, and forced a shift away from live band and musical collaborations towards a solo, studio-based mindset. Flevans started layering obscure samples and beats against his own instrumentation, a very similar process to his early releases on Tru Thoughts, and began to reminisce about the instrumental music that has left its mark on him over the last three decades.

And so a project was born – to create an album that could encapsulate all of the different genres he has tapped into over the years, as well as paying tribute to the producers and artists who have inspired him along the way. With nods to luminaries such as The Avalanches, early Ninja Tune and Nightmares on Wax, through to contemporaries such as Folamour and Art of Tones, the challenge was to create genre-crossing cohesion while keeping production trademarks in-tact.

After numerous rewrites and hundreds of discarded demos and ideas, ‘A Short Distance To Fall’ emerged. Diverse and eclectic, warm and cohesive throughout – from the atmospheric beats of ‘In Shadows’ to the uplifting radio-ready warmth of first single ‘It Take The Whole Day’, the lurching groove of ‘We Walk Alone’ and the driving disco of ‘Digits’ and ‘I Got Soul’, the album rewards repeated listens, never sitting still on one style or sound.

Decoded Sunday’s presents Mike Nixon

Heading up this month’s Decoded Sunday series is Mike Nixon. Mike’s sets have been described as fairground rides; once you are on, there’s no wanting to get off, even when it all ends. His mixing expresses what can’t be said, creating an unparalleled experience of layers, composure, melody and movement, all expressing emotion.

From the early 90s Mike has been living and breathing house music, from early days attending UK clubs, underground house parties and illegal raves. In his twenties he sold everything to make the move to Jersey; enabling him the opportunities to learn from his idols and develop the knowledge and creative flair his mixes show today.

In 2000, PosterBoy became a prolific music forum user, and under this alias and using his graphic design skills Mike promoted both local and international events and DJs, and built up his profile and gaining recognition for his passion for music.

Meanwhile Mike was, amongst other projects, working for Pure nightclub and Jersey Live, liaising with promoters, DJs, guests, and some of pop musics biggest selling artists. Every other waking moment was spent in the Sanctuary studio, buried in a German underground bunker, watching MM making progressive masterpieces with the likes of Jimmy Van M, Ian Ossia and Stuart King.
